Generator Size Categories

Hazardous waste generators are classified in one of the following three categories based on the amount of hazardous waste generated in a calendar month:

Generator Size Hazardous Waste Acute Hazardous Waste
Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQG) ≤220 pounds ≤2.2 pounds
Small Quantity Generators (SQG) 220 to 2,200 pounds ≤2.2 pounds
Large Quantity Generators (LQG) >2,200 pounds >2.2 pounds

A VSQG or SQG that exceeds monthly quantity limits due to a planned or unplanned event may be able to maintain the existing generator category if certain requirements are met. Learn more about episodic generation.

In 2018, Idaho adopted EPA’s hazardous waste generator improvements rule, which includes 60 changes to hazardous waste regulations to provide more clarity, flexibility, and environmental protection. Learn more about the generator improvements rule.
