Information for Schools

Air Quality and Wildfire Smoke

Check the current air quality on DEQ’s real-time air quality monitoring map. To see air quality forecasts, use DEQ’s air quality forecast tool.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare offers a Community Guide for Staying Healthy During Wildfire Smoke Events and Activity Guidelines for Wildfire Smoke Events. These resources can help you decide whether it’s safe to be outside.

Drinking Water

DEQ offers free sample analysis for lead in public schools and childcare facilities that are not regulated by public water systems. Tests are conducted through the Idaho Bureau of Labs (IBL), which is certified by EPA’s Drinking Water Office. Funds from this program are available through June 30, 2026. Visit the IBL website and complete a supply request to order sample containers. Learn more at DEQ’s Lead in Drinking Water web page.

Outreach

Yes, see all of DEQ’s environmental activities programs on the Outreach and Education web page.

Waste Management

Schools should contact a hazardous material disposal company to safely dispose of hazardous materials. For assistance covering the cost of lab cleanouts, schools can apply for a Source Water Protection Grant

Alternatively, schools can inventory and characterize the materials to determine if anything is hazardous. See the types of hazardous wastes on DEQ’s website. Before disposing of any nonhazardous materials, contact your local receiving landfill to determine any restrictions on acceptance of specific materials. Some landfills may not accept specific items even if they are nonhazardous.
