BOISE – As wildfire smoke continues to affect air quality across Idaho and the Northwest, the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is reminding residents to rely on trusted air quality resources when making decisions about outdoor activities.
During wildfire season, air quality information is widely available through websites, mobile apps, and individual air sensors. However, not all sources use the same data or forecasting methods. As a result, residents may see conflicting air quality conditions or forecasts depending on where they look.
DEQ’s air quality forecasts are developed by Idaho air quality specialists who analyze monitoring data, weather patterns, wildfire smoke forecasts, and local conditions to produce forecasts tailored specifically for Idaho. While some apps rely primarily on automated models or individual sensors, DEQ’s forecasts are reviewed by local experts who understand Idaho’s unique geography, weather patterns, and smoke impacts.

The free AIR Idaho mobile app provides current air quality conditions based on your location, three-day forecasts, air quality advisories, and other air quality resources.
