The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) seeks comment on the off-site waste processing and revision of milestones for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Site Treatment Plan (STP) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).
DOE submitted a request to add off-site waste streams for processing at the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project (AMWTP) and Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center (INTEC), and revise the STP Table 5-6a milestones, “FY2026 Original Volume Remoted-Handled Waste Certification Milestone for the Site Treatment Plan.” The off-site waste streams from Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawerence Livermore National Laboratory, and the Hanford Site consist of radioactive debris that requires processing and packaging into acceptable disposal containers. DOE has requested to revise the STP Table 5-6a original volume remoted-handled waste certification milestone schedule due to the delay in availability of the SC-55G2 shipping container required to certify, safely ship, and dispose of the higher dose remote-handled transuranic waste.
Per the Federal Facility Compliance Act of 1992, DEQ scheduled a 30-day public comment period, on both the proposed off-site mixed waste processing at the AMWTP and INTEC and revisions of the STP, prior to state approval.
The draft the off-site waste processing and revision of milestones for the STP are available for public review at DEQ’s State Office (1410 N. Hilton St.) and on DEQ’s website. Anyone may submit written comments regarding the proposed addition and revision. All written comments and data must be submitted by 5:00 p.m., Mountain Time, October 02, 2026.
