Vehicle Replacement and Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Funding
With funds from the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust and the federal Diesel Emission Reduction Act, DEQ implemented four rebate programs, the 2019, 2020, and 2025 Vehicle Replacement Programs (VRP) and the 2022 Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) Program. These programs support the replacement of older diesel vehicles with cleaner alternatives and the installation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure to reduce emissions across Idaho.
Funding Availability
DEQ may implement future vehicle replacement rebate programs when funding is available.
Future programs would continue to provide competitive, cost-share rebates for eligible vehicle replacements and, as applicable and allowable, electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
2019 Vehicle Replacement Program
The first VRP funding cycle awarded approximately $8.5 million to school districts, transit agencies, local governments, and private fleets across the state to replace older diesel vehicles with newer, cleaner models, including some natural gas, propane, and electric vehicles.
2020 Vehicle Replacement Program
The 2020 funding cycle awarded approximately $4.1 million to a similar mix of public and private fleets to replace older diesel buses and trucks with cleaner vehicles, including some alternative fuel and electric models.
2025 Vehicle Replacement Program
The 2025 funding cycle awarded approximately $6.0 million to school districts, bus companies, and trucking and waste-hauling fleets to replace older diesel vehicles with cleaner alternatives.
2022 Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Program
Through the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust, DEQ also funded approximately $2.5 million toward DC fast-charging stations along major highway corridors across Idaho, supporting electric vehicle travel throughout the state.
