DEQ approves US Ecology request to resume limited operations at Grand View facility

Monday, February 11, 2019

BOISE — The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) approved a request from US Ecology Idaho, Inc. (USEI) effective February 7, 2019, to resume limited operations at the company’s hazardous waste facility near Grand View.

DEQ approved USEI’s January 25, 2019 request for a temporary authorization following certification that the landfill cells are ready to receive waste and a subsequent letter certifying that necessary equipment is in place and can support the safe disposal of waste.

The company requested the temporary authorization in order to resume partial operation following an explosion that occurred at the facility in November 2018.

Under the agreement, USEI is authorized to accept and dispose of certain bulk wastes that meet disposal criteria. USEI is prohibited from conducting treatment operations during this initial phase.

The temporary permission granted to USEI is conditional on them meeting a number of requirements necessary to protect human health and the environment.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation.

The temporary authorization approval and supporting information are available on DEQ’s website (download at right).
