DEQ seeks comment on draft hazardous waste storage and treatment partial permit renewal for the Radioactive Waste Management Complex Accelerated Retrieval Project at INL

Accepting comments from May 6, 2022, through June 20, 2022.

DEQ is seeking public comment on a draft hazardous waste storage and treatment partial permit renewal for the Radioactive Waste Management Complex Accelerated Retrieval Project (RWMC ARP) on the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

The draft partial permit specifies procedures to operate mixed waste and debris storage and treatment at the RWMC ARP, a restricted area of 166 acres located in the southwestern corner of the INL. Regulated units at the RWMC ARP consist of several buildings used for container storage and miscellaneous treatment and storage as well as multiple outdoor trailer container storage areas. These units allow for the absorption of liquids, removal/treatment of prohibited items, and visual verification of waste to meet Waste Acceptance Criteria at the Waste Isolation Pilot Project, the nation’s only repository for the disposal of transuranic waste.

DEQ has reviewed the partial permit renewal application, determined that legal requirements designed to protect human health and the environment have been met, and proposes to issue the 10-year permit renewal.

The draft partial permit, permit attachments, public notice, and fact sheet are available for public review on DEQ’s website and at DEQ’s State Office (1410 N. Hilton Street, Boise ID).

The deadline for submitting comments is June 20, 2022, at 5 p.m. MDT. Submit written comments on DEQ’s website or by mail or email to:
