DEQ announces public comment period on draft permit to construct for Amalgamated Sugar Company LLC, and opportunity for a public hearing

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) announces a public comment period and an opportunity for a public hearing on a draft permit to construct for Amalgamated Sugar Company, LLC.

The company operates an existing beet sugar manufacturing plant located at located at 50 South 500 West, Paul, Idaho.

The draft permit would allow the facility to increase the daily lime rock throughput from 770 tons to 810 tons, the annual rock lime kiln throughput from 146,300 tons to 178,200 tons, and increase the coal/coke input to 59.2 tons per day. After the permit issuance, the facility may request that the permit to construct requirements be incorporated into the Tier I permit through an administrative amendment in accordance with “Rules for the Control of Air Pollution in Idaho” (IDAPA 58.01.01.381).

To request a public hearing, contact Whitney Rowley on or before April 6, 2021. Hearing requests should include a brief statement explaining why a public hearing on the air quality aspects of the project would be beneficial. The meeting location will be accessible to persons with disabilities, and language translators will be made available upon request. Requests for these accommodations must be made no later than five days prior to the meeting date.
