 Pollution Prevention Successes

 Environmental Management Planning

J.R. Simplot Company sets goals for environmental achievements. Among its goals is to reduce hazardous waste generation at all facilities to below regulatory limits.

 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

J.R. Simplot Company makes french fries. One hundred pounds of potatoes yield 50 to 60 pounds of product. What happens to the rest? The company goal is to use 100% of the potato. Through careful evaluation of the processes to produce potatoes and the type of waste generated, J.R. Simplot Company has found ways to turn potato waste into the following valuable products:
  • Cattle feed
  • Pet food
  • Bio-fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel
  • Starch coating used in paper processing and fry coating
In addition, the company has realized the following benefits:
  • Cost savings
  • Energy savings
  • Environmental conservation

 Recycling

J.R. Simplot Company has an active office recycling program recycling over 6,000 pounds of white paper each year, plus green ledger paper and aluminum. Aluminum tabs from soda cans are donated to the Ronald McDonald House which recycles them for additional funding.

 Research

J.R. Simplot Company is leading research efforts in biofuels including ethanol, bio-diesel and bio-gas. The company successfully tested a 50% biodiesel fuel made from used french fry frying oil, completing a 200,000 mile road test using this fuel blend.

 Leadership

The J.R. Simplot Company's Conda Pump Station is an Idaho GEMStars member. Other facilities are working toward this achievement.
