Pollution Prevention Champion:
Lilipad Studio, Hailey, Idaho

 Environmental Commitment

A devotion to artistry, combined with a passion and commitment to sustainability, has inspired Lilipad Studio’s line of heirloom quality, functional art furniture.

 Pollution Prevention Successes

 Green Purchasing

Lilipad Studio evaluates the raw materials it uses in its furniture-making business.  Green purchases include:

  • Green Seal certified paints that do not contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), an air pollutant. Green Seal is an independent, non-profit organization that identifies and promotes the manufacture, purchase, and use of environmentally responsible products and services.
  • Low-VOC sealers and finishes.
  • Formaldehyde-free fiberboard made of waste produced during wood processing.
  • Wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). FSC is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world's forests. FSC sets standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way.
  • Recycled-content office paper and stationery supplies.
  • Biodiesel fuel for its company vehicle.

In addition, Lilipad has implemented systems to ensure success of its green purchasing goals, including:

  • Training employees about non-toxic materials and supplies.
  • Evaluating paints and stains for known and suspected carcinogens.
  • Staying current on new eco-friendly materials available on the market.
  • Using just-in-time purchasing, ordering supplies only as needed.
  • Storing paints and supplies visibly in a way that ensures they are used on a first-in, first-out basis before their expiration dates.

 Recycling

Lilipad Studio recycles paint cans, mail, cardboard, office paper, cans, and glass, and uses recycled packing materials for shipping whenever possible.

 Water Conservation

Lilipad Studio has implemented water conservation measures including:

  • Using water in buckets for rinsing rags, sponges, and brushes as opposed to rinsing with running water.
  • Landscaping with drought-resistant and native plants.
  • Watering at night to minimize evaporation.

 Energy Conservation

Uses day-lighting and energy-efficient light bulbs to minimize energy use for lighting.

 Education

Lilipad uses its Web site to educate visitors about environmental products and sustainability. Staff present information about running a green business to schools.

 Leadership

Participates in the Environmental Resources Center’s Circle of Environmental Excellence and Leadership (CEEL) program.
