 Pollution Prevention Success

 Waste Reduction

In the past, Kimberly Nurseries burned all wood waste generated from landscaping work, but they now recycle 3,000 cubic yards of wood waste annually. The waste is processed into about 265 cubic yards of wood grindings, which are then used in five different mulch and soil amendment products used and sold by Kimberly Nurseries.  This practice helps improve air quality and reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill.  According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, nearly six million tons of wood waste were generated in 2003 in the United States.

Kimberly Nurseries has started a company-wide recycling program for cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic pots, irrigation pipe remnants, and scrap metal. Approximately 20,000 plastic pots, 2,000 pounds of polyethylene pipe remnants, and 1,500 pounds of scrap metal are recycled per year. The company also purchases recycled copy paper, which helps to reduce the demand for virgin materials.

 Water Conservation

Kimberly Nurseries recently made rain/moisture sensors standard on all irrigation systems sold at their store to prevent overwatering. The new systems reduce homeowner water use by approximately 20%.

 Vehicle Maintenance

Fuel consumption on all vehicles is monitored for variance so necessary repairs and/or maintenance can be conducted when necessary to maintain maximum fuel efficiency.

 Employee Involvement and Energy Conservation

Kimberly Nurseries stresses energy savings to their team members through their operations manual, list of values, and other internal publications and meetings. In fact, "Frugal with our resources" is one of the core values of the company's value statement.
