Pollution Prevention Champion:
CH2M HILL, Boise, Idaho

 Environmental Commitment
CH2M HILL encourages pollution prevention and environmental awareness on a local and corporate level, and in its day-to-day operations, strives to incorporate waste reduction measures that result in cost savings.

 Pollution Prevention Successes

 Recycling

Each year, CH2M HILL recycles almost 8,800 pounds of white paper, 2,900 pounds of colored paper, 200 pounds of newspaper, and 115 pounds of aluminum cans. Used printer toner cartridges also are recycled. In a pilot program, about 200 pounds of cardboard were recycled every two months. As a result of this success, CH2M HILL regularly separates its cardboard into a separate recycling container next to its trash Dumpster. Recycled-material carpet was used in an office remodeling project.

 Conservation

Use of white paper has declined by almost 20% per employee per month. The office replaced paper cups with ceramic mugs, subscribed to an electronic phone directory and converted most internal forms and memos to an electronic format. The electronic conversion of the weekly memo saves 6,000 sheets of paper every year.

Special maintenance measures have been adopted to preserve and foster habitat for a pair of Western Screech Owls that nest on the building.

 Waste Reduction

CH2M HILL often purchases used office furniture and donates outdated electronic equipment instead of sending it to the landfill. In recent projects, a password-protected Web site was created for posting and reviewing drafts. By managing the projects online, the project partners saved up to $10,000 in printing costs. The reports were then distributed to the public on CD-ROM instead of paper, at a cost savings of more than $30,000.

 Energy Efficiency

The office is switching to energy-saving lighting and expects to save 12?20% in energy costs. All desktop computers and laptops are "Energy Star" compliant.

 Leadership

In addition to the company-wide Greening Initiative and Sustainable Development Initiative, individual offices have volunteer Green Teams. On each project, CH2M HILL draws on the experience and knowledge of its skilled architects, engineers, and scientists to incorporate sustainability decisions and conserve resources, create a healthy environment and help clients save money. CH2M HILL has been recognized by the Idaho GEMStars Program.
