Pollution Prevention Champion:
Bogus Basin Mountain Resort, Boise, Idaho

 Environmental Commitment
Bogus Basin Mountain Resort is committed to managing health, safety and environmental matters as an integral part of its day-to-day operations.

 Pollution Prevention Successes

 Outreach

Bogus Basin Mountain Resort has established outreach and educational programs with the city of Boise, several nearby universities, and government agencies to promote environmental stewardship. Examples include wildflower walks, "ski with a ranger" program to learn about the winter environment, and an environmental component to ski school activities. The resort contributes $500,000 a year in educational programs and transportation to local schools.

 Conservation

Installation of low-flow facilities throughout the resort saved about 2 million gallons of water in just the first year. This reduction in water consumption also has decreased the volume of wastewater entering the sewage treatment system at the resort. All furnaces have been converted to propane gas. Waste oil from vehicles and equipment is reused to heat the shops. Cardboard recycling is also an important part of reducing waste at the resort.

 Transportation

Bogus Basin provides transportation for all employees. During the ski season, buses and vans ferry about 150 people to and from the resort daily. Guests also are encouraged to carpool; busing children to ski school on weekends has been very successful.

 Best Practices

Bogus Basin works closely with the U.S. Forest Service and others to implement environmental best practices in all operations, especially in construction of new facilities. A diligent revegetation program for disturbed soil uses indigenous plants. Reclamation of wetland areas has also been a great and recognized success.

 Leadership

Bogus Basin Mountain Resort endorses the National Ski Areas Association's Environmental Charter, "Sustainable Slopes," which promotes environmental best practices to continually improve environmental performance. The resort's response to a December 2000 heating oil leak demonstrated its commitment to a safe and healthy environment and earned EPA's praise for a job done right and quickly. Bogus Basin works with its local partners to enhance the mountain environment and promote its sustainable enjoyment.
