Reuse and Green Purchasing |
BabyBoms purchases unused rolls of waste fabric generated from companies located in the Pacific Northwest. This provides a market for the unused fabric that otherwise could have been waste and allows BabyBoms to purchase their materials locally. They are also currently working to create a new fabric made from 100% recycled polyester. BabyBoms sells wool diaper covers made from organic wool, and recycled wool covers made from felt wool sweaters discarded by secondhand stores. BabyBoms' diapers are made to last for a three-year diapering term and beyond. The company is also looking into a recycling program for diapers when they are no longer useable by donating them to orphanages abroad. When customers purchase any BabyBoms product, they are given their merchandise in a cloth bag made of scrap fabric left over from production. |
Waste Minimization |
In order to reduce waste from scrap fabric, BabyBoms utilizes a computerized cutting system that guarantees 90% better usage of fabric. Scraps are used to make nursing pads, which the company also sells. Any remaining scraps are sorted by size and used for other small wicking products or as stuffing for handmade toys or dog beds. |
Green Office Practices |
BabyBoms conserves electricity by turning down thermostats, opening windows, and running industrial sewing machines after the hours of peak electricity usage. Their printed business literature is limited to business cards printed with soy inks on recycled paper, directing customers to their Web site for more information. Recycled paper is also used for the office printer and copier. |
Conservation |
BabyBoms' diapers are made with a 100% poly wicking fabric that is stain resistant and does not need to be bleached or washed with any harsh detergents. The inner absorbent layer of the fabric is designed for the medical industry and will not harbor or "feed" microbial growth, thus reducing the need to chemically treat the diapers. This reduces the use of detergents and other cleaners, saves parents money, and conserves resources. BabyBoms conducts one-on-one teaching about the care and use of their diapers at the store, events, and through the “Care and Use” sheet available on their Web site. |
