Pollution Prevention Champion:
|
| The Lewiston Operations of ATK - Ammunition Accessories Inc. is a publically owned corporation that has been in operation since the early 1950s. The Lewiston operations currently produce industrial powerloads, small arms ammunition, and ammunition reloading components such as bullets and primers for recreational and government use. |
| Environmental Commitment |
| ATK believes that pollution prevention is a key issue that combines both process and environmental management. They have found that proactive prevention of pollution is nearly always more cost effective than handling, treating, or disposing of waste once it's generated. ATK recognizes pollution prevention activities as a good business strategy that supports the company's strong environmental stewardship. ATK is committed to producing products and services for its customers in an environmentally responsible manner. They believe that forward-looking, proper, cost-effective management of air, land, and water resources is key to their long-term success. |

Heavy Metal-Free Products |
ATK currently provides heavy metal–free products for commercial, government, and law enforcement customers. ATK is also providing substantial research and development dollars to further these product lines. |
Energy Efficiency |
In 2005, ATK initiated a lighting retrofit project. Approximately 1,000 light bulbs were converted from T12 fluorescent lights to T8 lights, saving per year about 2 million kilowatt hours and $100,000. Not only did this project save the company money, but ATK has found that the quality of lighting is superior and maintenance costs for the equipment have declined because of these newly designed bulbs. |
Water Conservation |
ATK initiated a project to reduce water use in 2009 after they were tasked to reduce water consumption by 10 percent or 14 million gallons. So far, ATK has conserved 5.5 million gallons of water and saved over $50,000. They achieved this by increasing operator education by providing water meters and routine reports of water usage, and by installing automatic valves to limit flow to only the periods when tanks are being used. |
Reuse and Recycling |
ATK's Lewiston products go through extensive quality assurance testing, which includes test firing ammunition. All spent materials from product testing are recycled. Recently, ATK has found a way to de-mill the scrap ammunition on-site in a way that allows them to reuse it in new products. In 2008, this activity recycled approximately 20,607 pounds of scrap and realized over $100,000 in savings. ATK uses a paperless system for personnel and purchasing requisitions. They also recover and recycle 6.1 million pounds of material per year and reuse 4.5 million pounds per year, which saves them over $990,000 per year. |
