Prevention Successes |
Leadership |
| ATK has a strong top-down commitment to environmental stewardship. The company has implemented 10 objectives for environmental management, including integration of environmental issues into business decisions, environmental assessments, training, conservation and pollution prevention. |
Energy Conservation |
| ATK has initiated an energy conservation program designating an Energy Coordinator, forming a conservation team, conducting energy assessments, and implementing energy-conservation projects throughout its facility. |
Cost Accounting |
| ATK CCI/Speer tracks environmental costs specific to each manufacturing operation. This system challenges individual manufacturing areas to look for conservation and waste reduction opportunities. |
Recycling and Reuse |
ATK CCI/Speer has an extensive recycling and reuse system. The facility recycles over 2 million pounds of metals each year. In addition, over 3.6 million pounds of lead are collected and reused on-site, reducing raw material purchases and hazardous waste disposal costs. Bright yellow collection containers for ammunition components are situated in accessable locations throughout the facility. Employees are encouraged to pick up any components (lead bullets and brass cases) they find and deposit them into these containers, giving all employees the opportunity to participate in reducing waste and minimize risks to the environment. Traditional items such as office paper, aluminum cans, toner cartridges, batteries and cardboard also are recycled, diverting over 200 tons of additional materials from local landfills. |
Technology |
| Non-contact cooling water is rerouted directly to the wastewater treatment plant where it is reused for plant processes such as backwashing filters. Reuse of water reduces the quantity of fresh water required for maintaining the filtration process. This, along with other conservation measures, results in a savings of over 2,732,711 gallons/year. |
