INL Oversight Program:

Oversight Monitoring Overview

Environmental Surveillance
Community Monitoring

Monitoring is the backbone of Oversight's efforts to independently assess activities at the INL on behalf of the citizens of Idaho. We're one of four organizations that monitor the environment on and around the INL. (The other organizations are the Department of Energy, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes.) Each organization uses slightly different methods and monitors different places, but by comparing the results, we obtain an important quality check on the overall picture of how INL affects our environment.

Oversight's monitoring program has two complementary components: environmental surveillance and community monitoring. The key difference in these two programs is how data are provided.

 Environmental Surveillance
The Environmental Surveillance Program (ESP) has been around since Oversight's inception. ESP reports are issued annually and quarterly:
  • Annual reports include comparisons to data collected by other organizations and analysis of trends.

Note: Both types of reports are mailed to those who request them. Current reports are also posted in our online Library.

 Community Monitoring

Community Monitoring, part of a partnership with DOE, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the city of Idaho Falls, and the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, is one of Oversight's monitoring activities. Under Community Monitoring, information collected at stations on and around INL is displayed at kiosks in local communities and at the Lost River Rest Area near Arco.

Community Monitoring data can also be accessed from the Idaho Environmental Monitoring Program Web site.
