Battelle Energy Alliance

 

Link to Letter from Governor Kempthorne and Idaho's congressional delegation welcoming Battelle Energy Alliance as the new contractor for the Idaho National Laboratory.

 

Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA) is the seventh and current prime contractor for the INEEL. BEA 's contract began on February 1, 2005, and continues until 2015. Members of the alliance include organizations with a long history of research and operations experience:

  • Battelle
  • BWX Technologies, Inc.
  • Washington Group International
  • Electric Power Research Institute
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with supporting roles for Boise State University, Idaho State University, and the University of Idaho

 Battelle

History

Started in 1929 as the Battelle Memorial Institute, with a focus on "creative and research work and the making of discoveries and inventions."

Notable achievements

Conducted research that helped pave the way to today's office copiers, compact discs, bar code technologies, and electronic commerce.

Current works

Has more than 16,000 employees and conducts $3 billion in research yearly. Manages the Pacific Northwest Laboratory in Richland, Washington; Brookhaven National Laboratory (through Brookhaven Science Associates, LLC); Oak Ridge National Laboratory (through UT-Battelle, LLC); and co-manages the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

 BWXT

History

Started by providing marine boilers for ships during WWII, but participation in the Manhattan Project started the company's involvement in nuclear technologies.

Notable achievements

Designed/manufactured components for the first nuclear submarine (U.S.S. Nautilus), designed reactor, performed design work on the INL Advanced Test Reactor (ATR).

Current works

BWXT manages the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas.

 Washington Group International

History

Formerly Morrison-Knudsen, Washington Group International has a long history with large-scale construction projects, dating back to 1900.

Notable achievements

Hoover Dam, the San Francisco Bay Bridge, and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.

Current works

Destruction of weapons of mass destruction in former Soviet Union countries, destruction of chemical weapons in the U.S., rebuilding projects in Afghanistan and Iraq.

 Electric Power Research Institute

History

Established in 1973 to manage collaborative research for the U.S. electricity industry.

Notable achievements

More than 900 patents involving power generation, environmental protection, power delivery.

Current works

Infrastructure Security Initiative project to pinpoint vulnerabilities in the electric power infrastructure, and Sustainable Integrated Public Services project to design/build an advanced mixed-use community.

 Massachusetts Institute of Technology

History

Founded in 1961 by William Barton Rogers, who envisioned a "teaching laboratory."

Notable achievements

Forty-seven alumni, faculty, researchers and staff have won Nobel Prizes. Notable achievements of faculty and graduates include first chemical synthesis of penicillin, development of inertial guidance systems, and magnetic core memory for digital computers.

Current works

Current research includes environment and sustainable development and information sciences and technology. MIT's nuclear engineering program was ranked first in a recent listing of America's best colleges.
