Idaho Fire Safety Burn Permits

Individuals living outside city limits anywhere in Idaho who plan to burn for any reason—including crop residue burning and excluding recreational campfires—during closed fire season, from May 10 to October 20 every year, must obtain a fire safety burn permit.

If you live inside city limits and you plan to burn, a permit from your local fire department may be required.

As a convenience to the grower, DEQ's crop residue burning application communicates with the Idaho Department of Land's (IDL) burn permits system to assist in issuing IDL burn permits. IDL burn permits for crop residue burning may only be obtained through DEQ's system. DEQ's crop residue burning application contains links to view the IDL burn permit. For questions about fire safety permits, contact IDL at 866-581-6498.

9/10/2018 - Northern Idaho Counties Outside of Coeur d'Alene and Nez Perce Reservation Boundaries

Meteorological Forecast and Air Quality Discussion:

Today, an upper level jet streak will move over north Idaho and will realistically just bring stronger winds to most of the region with a chance for showers over the northern Panhandle to Coeur d’Alene. The surface pressure gradient will be oriented from south to north with an indication of a weak marine push into Central Idaho; however, a frontal passage will be the primary player today. Surface wind speeds will range from 5-15 mph and will be from the southwest with locally northwest winds over the LC Valley. Skies will be partly sunny to mostly cloudy. Mixing heights are expected to range from 5,000-7,000 feet AGL over all airsheds. The winds aloft over northern Idaho will be from the southwest at 10-25 mph. Ventilation will be POOR in the morning becoming EXCELLENT in the afternoon. The inversions will break out between 10am-11am. There is a Red Flag Warning over extreme southeastern Idaho County. Air quality is good. Both PM2.5 and ozone are below program concentration thresholds.

Disclaimer:
This meteorological forecast discussion was prepared for Idaho Department of Environmental Quality for the sole purpose of forecasting crop residue burn decisions within the State of Idaho by DEQ staff. DEQ burn decisions do not apply to the Coeur d'Alene and Nez Perce Reservations. For forecasts and burn decisions for the Coeur d'Alene and Nez Perce Reservations, call 800-345-1007.
