| The
Lewiston Region covers 16.5% of Idaho's geographical area and is
home to 8.1% of the state's population. Major cities include Lewiston,
Moscow, Grangeville, and Orofino. The region is well known for the
timbered watersheds of the Clearwater, Selway, and Lochsa Rivers,
and for wheat and rapeseed farming on the Palouse Prairie. The Snake
River joins the Clearwater River at the port of Lewiston, as it
leaves Hells Canyon, the uppermost point on the Columbia-Snake ocean-going
transportation system.
Timber
product industries and recreation are important to the economic
base of the region. Dworshak Reservoir on the North Fork Clearwater
River is a significant recreational fishery. The upper Selway and
main Salmon Rivers, popular recreational boating rivers, pass through
several wilderness areas in the state. |
