| Background | |||
Fish Creek is located approximately six miles north of Rathdrum, Idaho and approximately 17 miles northeast of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Fish Creek, a third order tributary, originates in the mountain slopes just across the Idaho border in the state of Washington and flows east approximately 5.5 miles and drains into Twin Lakes. The Fish Creek watershed is approximately 14,143 acres, most of which is mountainous and forested terrain, managed for timber production and agriculture (IDL 2001). Landownership within the watershed is primarily privately owned with smaller tracts of state owned land throughout. Climate in the area is characterized by warm dry summers and cool wet winters. Annual precipitation ranges from around 30 to 50 inches in the lower and higher elevations, respectively. Vegetation varies according to elevation and aspect. Higher elevations generally support a mixed coniferous forest, while the lower elevations support the Cedar-Hemlock habitat types. The riparian zones are dominated by alder, willow, and cottonwood species. |
