| Region Characteristics |
This large region includes forest
lands with active timber harvesting, extensive desert rangeland,
old and currently active mines, and an abundance of fertile valleys
where crops, such as onions, mint, corn, and fruit are grown. The
region includes the Mountain Home Air Force Base, the lower Snake
River from King Hill to Hells Canyon Dam, and the recreational area
of McCall and Cascade. With only 27% of the state's geographical
area and 40% of the population, this southwest corner of the state
can be considered the population center. This region, containing
the state capital and several smaller cities, has been one of the
fastest growing regions in the state. With growth comes a myriad
of environmental issues, including air pollution from traffic congestion,
potential ground water contamination, and the need for more drinking
water and wastewater facilities. |
